Dalston Works wins Evening Standard’s Eco-Living Award

Native’s eco-friendly Build to Rent scheme at Dalston Works has been named as one of the winners of Evening Standard’s New Homes Awards 2018. The awards showcase London’s most innovative new homes with categories such as Best Conversion, Best Luxury Home and Best First Time Buy.

Dalston Works in Hackney claimed the title of Eco-Living Award, as one of the world’s largest CLT building. As the building operator for the eco-build, Native are thrilled with Waugh Thisleton Architects design and construction of a sector leading environmentally friendly rental development. The 101 residential apartments benefit from a reduction in noise pollution, an improvement in air quality and a carbon negative home.

The apartment scheme is constructed from CLT – cross-laminated timber – which is a revolutionary structure five times lighter than concrete. During the engineering process, large pieces of timber sourced from sustainably managed forests are stuck together to form a strong and safe building material.

David Lomax, Senior Associate at Waugh Thistleton commented on the project, “The reason that we chose CLT for Dalston Lane is because our practice believes that if we’re going to build the homes that we need, to solve the UK’s housing crisis, we need to do it in a sustainable way. So first and foremost in any project the reason we use timber is to reduce the amount of carbon, reduce the amount of concrete and steel that we’re emitting into the atmosphere by solving the other problems we have in the world such as a lack of housing.”

Native’s Commitment to Eco Housing

Dalston Works is currently the world’s largest building using pioneering CLT, at ten storeys high. However this isn’t Native’s only property which has pushed the boundaries of ground-breaking eco design and sustainability. We always try to use sustainable measures during every build process and most recently our Native Bankside aparthotel at Empire Warehouse have achieved a BREEAM Excellent Rating. We look to design, build and operate environmentally buildings to create a better future for our tenants.

“Native have always strived to be at the forefront of influencing the development and operation of buildings in the most environmentally efficient way possible. We’re as thrilled with this Eco-Living Award as we are to be launching the UK’s first BREEAM Excellent rated aparthotel in August this year.”
